The Dragon in Amestris

So, this is somewhat random, but Inhonoredglory and Toothlesslove have shared some Fullmetal Alchemist/HTTYD crossover stories with me and I really like the concept! They recommended I write one, so I have put this small piece together. If you've seen Fullmetal Alchemist, this might be a fun read! If you've not finished it... it doesn't have any major spoilers, so it's pretty safe.

Anyway, I hope you like it!

The Dragon in Amestris

The sound of huffing breath and clattering nails echoed down a dimly lit alley in Central. A large black shadow was rushing down the streets, keeping out of the orange glow of the lampposts. Behind this shadow was a faint trail of blood, glistening a deep red on the cobblestone.

The shadow turned a corner into a particularly dark street and then collapsed, leaning against a wall. It turned to look behind itself, it’s eyes brilliant green, both fierce and frightened. Toothless was more lost than he had ever been… he hadn’t seen Hiccup in… how long had it been, days, weeks, a month? He had been trapped, trapped away from the sun and away from any comfort. He had only barely escaped with his life, and the deep gash in his forelimb was still bleeding.

He couldn’t sit still for long. This city was nothing like Berk. Its streets were straight and clean. Everything was geometric and sterile. Although he could see dozens of windows warmly lit, very few people walked these streets at night. The dragon certainly had a guess as to why. This city felt… wrong. Toothless couldn’t exactly wrap his head around what the sensation was. Was it hearing or touch? It was like the ground was squirming under his feet, making him feel dizzy and sick.

Having caught his breath, the dragon decided to proceed more cautiously. His huge wings and lithe body melted into the shadows of the building as he began to slowly move further and further away from the nightmare he had escaped. His heart was still pounding hard as he made his way to a deep canal. Before stepping out into the open, the dragon glanced left and right, his ears twitching as he craned his senses out into this foreign world. No one was around… no apparent danger. The dragon limped quickly to the edge of the water and began to quickly lap up the cold liquid.

Something behind him made a sound, the small clink of a shingle on the rooftop. Toothless whipped around instantly, snarling at his pursuer. Upon the roof of the building behind him was the hunched figure of a fat, troll-like creature. Its eyes glistened in the darkness and its mouth was exposed in a wide grin.

“I found it!” The monster yelled in a high and squeaky tone. It leaped off the building at Toothless, but the dragon was quick and dangerous even when injured. The Night Fury jumped back, avoiding the body slam of his enemy and clawing him directly across the face. Before the monster could recover from the attack, the dragon jumped over him, landed, and then used his wings to propel himself directly into his stumbling foe. The blow sent the fat thing flying directly into the river. Toothless snorted angrily but decided running would be better than staying and continuing the fight.

The dragon continued to flee. It felt like hours and hours passed as he tried to keep to the shadows in the strange streets. He was desperately tired and hungry, but he could feel it: that thing was still hunting him. Suddenly, he saw a figure step out into the light in front of him. The dragon could not make out their features, but the shape was unmistakable. Hiccup had found him! “Toothless!”

The dragon rushed forwards, his heart filled with relief, but then he stopped. He felt sick again, like the squirming of the streets was coming from Hiccup too. “What’s the matter?” The boy asked. Toothless glared. Hiccup took a step closer, and then the dragon openly snarled. Those were not Hiccup’s steps. The steps of this boy were heavy, and he smelled like blood. Worst of all, this… thing…. It felt like its insides were screaming.

“Aw’, you’re no fun!” The figure exclaimed it’s voice changing to a boyish tone and its eyes glowing red. Suddenly its arm lashed forward, growing long and sinuous like a snake, and struck Toothless in the shoulder. The point was cold and sharp, the familiar bite of steel. Toothless staggered, and the figure in front of him changed in a buzz of red lightning. It was another monster, but this one looked like a young human. It had long black hair and an androgynous body. “I guess Father was right, you really do have the ability to detect us!”

Toothless reared back, yanking away from the blade and preparing to unleash death on his attacker. The time for subtly was over. It was fight or die. However, before Toothless could attack, the fat creature fell right on top of him. In an instant, he had wrapped his huge arms around Toothless’s throat. The dragon tried to shake him loose, but he could barely breathe. The monster weighed so much, and he was shockingly strong. Then a foot came down on Toothless’s head with brutal force. The slender youth effortlessly pressed Toothless’s head into the pavement, stunning him. But it was worse than that. This was gloating. He was the Alpha of dragon-kind, and this child was standing with his heal triumphantly on his head.

“Now, now, Father wants you alive, but that doesn’t mean he needs all of your parts attached.” The youthful monster was chuckling as he morphed his hand into a blade and brandished it at the dragon’s face.

“Ooh! Ooh! Can I eat the parts we don’t need?” The fat one asked gleefully.

“Eh, don’t see why not.” The thin one said, leering keenly at his victim.

Then, the wall to the right of Toothless lit up in blue lightning. In the blink of an eye, a huge fist of stone punched both creatures away from him. “Hey, Envy, back off you jerk!” Toothless was woozy from the choke-hold, but he heard a footstep that sounded familiar. Right foot: clunk. Left foot: clank. He tried to turn to see who had saved him, but it wasn’t Hiccup. It was a short boy in a bright red coat. He had golden eyes and golden hair.

“Well if it isn’t the Fullmetal Pipsqueak!” Envy said, wiping the dirt off of his jaw.

The blonde boy rushed forward screaming a cacophony of swears at the thin monster, but the creature laughed and avoided his flurry of attacks. “Don’t call me little!” The boy shrieked.

“Well, Alchemist, I think you better take a good look around you.” The youthful monster said with a gleeful edge in his tone. “You’re outnumbered, and even if you are a sacrifice, that doesn’t mean we won’t find someone to replace you.” The fat monster had gotten to its feet and was now looking directly at the boy. “Can I eat him??”

“No. Just rough him up.” The thin one said.

“Well, that’s where you are wrong. I’m not outnumbered!” The young boy clapped his hands and struck the ground, causing the street to ripple and then send spears of stone flying at his opponents. “NOW brother!” He yelled.

A towering suit of armor ran out and used similar blue lighting to shape the ground, building a wall around Toothless. “You’ll be okay,” it said with the voice of a young boy. The sound of the destruction from the other side of the wall was monumental.

“Big brother! Don’t destroy the whole city!” The armor shouted.

Then suddenly, the wall shattered. A huge green fist holding the blonde boy in a deadly grip had punched effortlessly through it. The thin monster’s arm had grown into this monstrous, twisted limb. “Don’t underestimate me.” He growled. “You humans are only alive because I’m allowing it.” He tightened his grip, causing the boy to shout out in pain. The armor stood up, “Brother!”

“Now give the dragon back to us, or I’ll break him.”

The iron armor clenched his fists angrily. His hand was still on the dragon’s back, but suddenly his hand was lifted up. The Night Fury was standing, and his eyes were slits of pure rage. Before anyone could say or do anything, before the armor could even react, Toothless released a tremendous bolt of flame. It hit the slender monster directly in the face, blowing the entire top of his torso into fragments of burning flesh and bone that turned to ash long before they hit the ground.

The fat monster lunged forward, but the dragon fired again. The bolt did the exact same thing to this fat creature’s body. The huge hand gripping the red-coated boy loosened, and he quickly pried his way out of it. However, both monsters suddenly reformed. Their bones and sinews grew remarkably fast. The two brothers stood at either side of the dragon who had spread his wings wide.

“Tch.” The slender one spit. “Not bad. That actually really hurt. But now I’m going all out. Now I’m going to show you something neat!”

“Envy!” A voice echoed out of the shadows. The two brothers looked around but couldn’t see anyone who could be speaking. The voice was calm, yet bitterly sinister and powerful.

“What is it?” The thin one yelled, clearly annoyed.

“You are risking too much. That beast is not worth exposing yourself… nor is he worth destroying sacrifices. You are a fool. Now return home. We will have everything we want soon enough.”

The thin one snarled, but then turned to the fat one and told him they were leaving. “You’re lucky this time alchemists… but I wouldn’t keep pushing if I were you. People will get hurt.” The youth said with one last frightening gleam in his eye before quickly darting away, worried Toothless would fire another shot.

The dragon breathed a sigh of relief… slowly lowering his wings and then unintentionally falling to the cold ground.

The blonde boy walked up to him and put his hand on his head. “You were freakin’ awesome.” He said, smiling broadly and closing his eyes. He then pointed with his white-gloved hand to his chest. “I’m Edward Elric. That’s my brother Alphonse. We are gonna help you.”

Toothless glanced at the armor. It felt like it was smiling, and then it nodded. “Mhhmmm!”
