Amazing, amazing quote!

"You have the heart of a chief and the soul of a dragon."

That quote is utterly fantastic and I sooooo hope it makes it into the film and isn't just filler material for that beautiful trailer. The fact that it is Valka saying it is also very telling and significant. She understands both sides so very well. She was married to a chief (and though we don't know why she never returned to him, I think we would be stupid to assume after seeing this trailer that she does not love Stoick very deeply), and she has spent twenty years alone with only dragons as company. In a way... this quote is just perfect, and it is awesome that Valka sees this in Hiccup even though she has only really known him for a short time. I guess sometimes familiarity blinds us to good things in ourselves or others. Anyway, it is a perfect way to describe Hiccup. He does have the heart of a chief, and a great one at that. He may not want to step into his father's shoes at the beginning of the second film, but all the critical elements of being a great leader are embedded deeply into Hiccup's core. He is courageous, self-sacrificing, convicted, and has a clear head when it comes to discerning right from wrong. And then, mixed in with all that is the true dragonish soul. Hiccup is empathetic, he looked at Toothless and saw himself. He is willing to feel, to care, and so many of the tiny screenshots that we see of him show the sweetest ranges of emotions. On top of that dragon-like empathy you have a strong since of adventure, fun, loyalty, and love. He's an incredible person, and it's great to see that Valka can see all that in him because with the challenges he is staring down (becoming chief, fighting a war, protecting the dragons), it would be easy for him to wonder how on earth he will ever stand against such a storm. So, yep, I love that quote and it gives me chills every time!

Little did Dagur know...

This is actually a quote from Dagur in the second to last episode of DoB. I actually found that quote incredibly funny because Dagur has NO IDEA how accurately he is describing things! He's trying to be mocking and condescending, but little does he grasp the beauty of what he is describing. So, I decided to take the quote and give it a sequel twist. How's Toothless been feeling? How've the last five years treated him? Hiccupy good, that's for sure! But... that may change very, very soon.

Really Un-Awesome Quote

Seriously, I had dinner with someone who actually said that! Who could possibly think of Hiccup as a loser. Apparently my friend just didn't really grasp the film, but I can forgive him... sort of! I did say in this post that I had met Hiccup haters, and this quote just proves it! Actually, I was even given permission to name him, but I don't fee like it. The guy shouldn't be proud of being mistaken! Yeah, he better just hope that Toothless didn't hear that. Haha, the above gif is pretty fitting. I was sort of expecting a positive thought about Hiccup since we were comparing him with Merida from Brave, (and I was saying that, unlike Merida, Hiccup really wasn't bratty or rebellious), but instead of a compliment I got Hiccup-hate. I think I sort of handled it well... I hope I did, but I don't like when people attack Hiccup as a character (which is pretty much attacking him as a person.)

Now, I think anyone who grasps the story of the film would certainly think that Hiccup was in no way a loser. Maybe to this Hiccup-hater's standards, but not to mine (or many others). Hiccup, for one, brought down a Night Fury within the first ten minutes of the film. That is something because no one can say that Toothless wasn't a really impressive foe. Then, I am seriously curious as to why one would consider him a loser... Is it because he spared Toothless? Is it because he isn't some incredible hero, just a boy who follows his convictions? Was my Hiccup-hating friend wanting some super hero instead of a human protagonist who proves himself and stands up for what is right? Hiccup may be many things, and at times he loses (The Docks scene shows that off quite well), but Hiccup is most certainly not a loser in final tally because he did not let loss defeat him. He'd been losing all his life, but he triumphed over that, and that makes him far more of a winner than any super-human or epic hero. Hiccup, by the end of the film, truly had lost quite a lot, but he had won so much more, and anyone who can't see that needs to re-watch the film, and if they still don't see it, they need to watch it again and actually pay attention...

Wow... Hiccup finally coming out and telling it like it is. Kind of shocking, and it clearly upset Dagur who was trying to be chummy with Hiccup. Actually... I was really happy to finally see this. Hiccup has been trying to please Dagur and keep the peace ever since he met the maniacal chief, but by the end of the episode, some things have become painfully clear. Dagur has pretty much certainly killed his own father, he's offered to kill Stoick, he's hunted dragons and intentionally killed them in horrible ways, and he wants to wear Toothless's skull as a helmet! I mean, peace is great, and I am really not saying I think violence is a good thing, but I so, SO admire Hiccup for finally tossing down the gauntlet. Dagur is evil, and keeping treaties with this evil, evil young man will inevitably lead to Hiccup having to choose between what is right and what will keep the peace. He chose Toothless over peace, and I wasn't at all surprised by that! After seeing how truly wicked and sadistic Dagur is, I am glad that Hiccup thinks keeping peace with him is wrong.

That moment is just so, so beautiful! It speaks volumes about what Hiccup feels about Toothless, how convicted he is, and how much he has grown to love that dragon. Toothless is not some pet, and Astrid realizes that after Hiccup makes his curt response. Toothless was the first friend Hiccup ever had, the first person to like him, and pretty much accept every bit of him. Even after only what appears to be a couple weeks, Hiccup is willing to hide the biggest secret in Viking history if only to protect his newfound friend. There bond is already becoming unbreakable, and I just can't wait to see how they have grown even closer by the time of the second film. Their friendship is just so beautiful...

Ok, so this entry will be a quicker one! I love this quote! I intend to post lots of quotes from lots of different sources. Most will either be from or be applicable to HTTYD, but some might just be special to me. Anyway, Stoick has a great point! Lots of people will tell you that you can have great stuff and do great things with no cost, but the simple truth is that we are to do what is best. That is very, very often hard! Still doing what is right and best is what I want to strive for, and if that means I have to push through hard things, sacrifice, be misunderstood, or mocked, I still want to strive to live in the most Christ like way because that is what is best!
