HTTYD in Live Action

About a month ago, news began to brew about a live-action project in development for the Dragons franchise. Since then it seems to have been confirmed that HTTYD will be getting a live-action remake helmed by Dean Deblois. I'm going to give my thoughts on this news, so click through to read more.

HTTYD2 day!

Well, it has been 6 years folks! Six years since I cried my eyes out during the credits of this film! Haha, in all seriousness, I am really thankful for the direction HTTYD2 took the franchise. It isn't common that an animated sequel feels as true to the original while also being bold enough to age up the entire cast and grow characters in the way Hiccup and Toothless were grown in the second film. I am hoping to watch the film tonight with some fellow fans. Here is to yet another year of loving this dynamic duo!

How To Train Your Dragon: Homecoming

Well... Long-time no post! How is everyone? I guess it takes a full-blown short to drag me up out of the grave and get me typing! In all seriousness, my work has been killer recently. I'm preparing for a committee meeting (which happens to be tomorrow), and it has left me much less free time. All that stress has gotten me into sort of a rut, and it makes it really hard to relax and enjoy my fandoming. Anyway, enough about me, let me tackle the short! I'll be covering it probably pretty quickly, both the aspects I loved and the parts that I'm not sure about, so let's get going.

Dangerous Dragons

Although I have used a gif from the second film, I really want to take a moment to appreciate the trilogy as a whole on this subject. I want to tackle the inherent danger of any interaction between humanity and the dragons, how this is balanced in the films, and why it makes the friendship Hiccup has with Toothless all the more remarkable. I was particularly pleased with two scenes in the third film... so let's dive in!

How They View Their Dragons

Now that we've seen the last chapter of the HTTYD story, I want to expand upon a post a wrote way back comparing Hiccup, Valka, and Drago. This will be my attempt to analyze the mindset of each of these characters, especially in regard to the dragons that inhabit their world. This will contain spoilers, so please only read ahead if you've seen the third film!

Toothless: The Motives Behind His Actions

Although I think the second movie is a strong sequel to HTTYD, one thing did feel lacking until the third act. Unlike the first film, Toothless's actions in the beginning of the second had very little impact on the plot. He was there, and it was fun to see him interacting with Hiccup, but I know myself and many other fans wished the film would have given him a more developed arch.

Then we get the third film. Every one of Toothless's actions has shattering impact on the story as a whole. It was fantastic, but also kinda scary! He isn't a speaking character, so often times we are left to interpret how much he knows and what he is thinking. I am going to address some instances in the third film where I think it is critical to look at Toothless's actions in the proper light if all the themes are going to be woven together... and more importantly, these areas need to be viewed properly for Toothless to feel in character.

Deathgrippers

HTTYD3 gave us many new things to appreciate and analyze (along with taking our hearts out and stomping on them). One such new jewel is Grimmel’s personal pack of hunting dragons: The Deathgrippers. In this post, I want to analyze their anatomy and abilities, and also discuss why I really enjoyed their involvement in the plot.

HTTYD3: My Interpretation of The Ending

So, I plan to analyze the very final scenes of HTTYD3. Obviously, this will have spoilers, so please only read it if you've seen the film!

Friendship vs Romantic Love: Which one Triumphs in HTTYD3?

This is the first of my posts with SPOILERS. If you haven't seen HTTYD3 yet, don't read this post. I'll be diving into numerous important scenes and discussing the plot as a whole. What I want to tackle is the issue of whether or not HTTYD3 replaces the core heart of the franchise (which has thus far been the strong friendship between Hiccup and Toothless) with romantic love.

Watching (sobbing) through the Second Film... the Last Time Before We See The End

Whew, well... I tackled the second movie this evening! Gosh, it's basically just one day until seeing the third one! I knew this day would come eventually, just not so soon! I don't feel ready! I've made notes while watching through the second film, but they probably aren't as thoughtful as the ones I made for the first one (because I was crying too much, tbh!!). If you'd like to see my thoughts, click the "read more".

My Top 15 Favorite Stories (2018 version!)

Well, another year has passed and I've fallen for some new stories! I want to post my current list of top favorites, and I'd be really interested to see any of your lists as well! Some of this will obviously be repeats from my previous post... but there are few fun changes!

My thoughts on the second HTTYD3 trailer

Well, the gifs aren't mine, but I do wanna finally sit down and talk a bit about what we saw in the trailer! I'm kinda short on time, but I'll try and get my thoughts together and have something worth reading!

Dragonvine! (Graphic Novel Review)

Well, the new Graphic Novel (written in part by Dean! Yes!) came in today. I should probably be focusing on the mountain of work I still need to do... but I couldn't resist! I read the whole thing, and now I want to give you my thoughts!

Saturday, June 9, 2018

Well, isn't this SHOCKING

Ok, I do plan on discussing the second half of the trailer in bulk (like what I did with the first half), but before I do that, I want to tackle this whole Toothless-Lightning-thing! I've never really tried to have a solid, scientific theory on the blue Alpha glow we saw in the second movie. I always thought it was just cool looking... but kinda unrealistic. Now I am going to try and offer an explanation on both that and the electrifying scene we witnessed in the trailer. Granted, this will only be a theory. After all, I haven't seen the third film yet!

Dragon Scales

Alright! Time to discuss the new dragon-scale armor that Hiccup and the rest of the gang are sporting in the newest promotional images for HTTYD3! However, as usual, I think I'm going to go overboard. I plan to not only discuss the armor and what I think of it but also dragon scales and dragon hide as a whole.

Happy Single's Awareness Day! (Usertoothless's Favorite Ships)

So, it's that time of year again... a time where my dating friends all wind up spending tons of money, time, and thought to please and impress their significant other. I don't have that problem! So, I'm gonna steal a little time away from all of my lab work and actually post a list of my favorite couples from fiction. Some of these are more canon than others, but all of them are generally accepted in their fandoms, so I'm going for it!

The Drastically Unusual Nature of HTTYD2

So, it’s been a while since I’ve done a full blown analysis post on HTTYD or HTTYD2, but I hope to make up for it with this one! I’ve wanted to write it ever since 2014, but I’ve always been too intimidated or too busy. In this post, I want to talk about to mold-breaking nature of the HTTYD movies, particularly in their “teen vs parent” theme. I think the How To Train Your Dragon franchise has actually pulled off something that most other animated movies treat in a very one-dimensional, almost naive fashion. So, let’s hit this thing running!

Why it's a Good Thing for Toothless to be Scary

Well, it's Halloween again, so I've managed to crank down and actually get another post out! I was actually really hoping to do an art piece, but I just didn't have the time. Still, hopefully you'll find this analysis interesting. I hope to take a look at the darker, scarier side of the best dragon of all time and to then explain how that is one of the many elements that makes Toothless great. So, turn off your lights, and let's just dive right in.
